The Rev couldn't quite make up his mind about which mosaic tiling to have for his bathroom floor...

The Rev has a word. With spare ribs...

Famous people are always on the move, they really are. Which is why when we rang Jon McClure aka the Reverend for a chat about touring with Oasis, Sheffield Wednesday and Championship Manager's best players, he was busy enjoying a Chinese follo wing a hectic few days. So did we offer to leave him enjoy his chow mien and ring him back? Course not...

Alright Rev?

I’m in Glasgow, we’re playing Glasgow tonight. So I'm just having a bit of Chinese food. We’ve just finished the Oasis tour, I'm just return ing to work but I’m melted because we had a bit of a party after it.

How was the Oasis tour?

It was amazing. We just loved it, we had a mosh pit every night! The crowds were good, Oasis are dudes! It was just completely enjoyable. We got really mashed up with them last night, but it’s been amazing, Oasis were everything you’d want them to be.

We hear you're big Wednesday fans?

Absolutely. Me, Tom the guitarist and Ed the bass player are all Sheffield Wednesday fans. There’s six of us but the other three aren’t too bothered about football so with us three all Wednesday it’s good that we’re all at the same page if you know what I’m saying. It’s not like we’ve got any Blades about so we’re not rowing about it!

Do you play much? We imagine you as a bit of a handy targetman...

We’re meant to be playing at Hillsborough soon for a charity match, which is going to be amazing I reckon. I think Chris Waddle might be on our side, so that could be handy! If I get back post with Waddle with the ball at his feet I’ll be well happy to get one in at Hillsborough! Dream come true, me rising like a salmon on back stick!

So you're pretty good then?

No not really I’m terrible. I’m useful though, like Carsten Jancker or Emile Heskey. If I play with a little man I’m alright! We’ve got this football team where loads of our lads from our end of town play against other people from another bit of town. And my brother for some reason wanted to go upfront with me so basically you had two big lumps up front! I was like “Craig get playing at centre half and get a fast kid up here” but he wasn’t having it! Quinn and Phillips is what you need!

Sunderland legends right there...

Actually I’m a bit of a friend of Sunderland football club after our Oasis dates. I made friends with the people in hospitality who are sending me a Sunderland shirt with “McClure” on the back. And they’ve invited me to watch the Man United game this season. So I’ll not be doing Newcastle this year for that!

Great stuff. So how did you end up being a Wednesday fan?

They’re my local club, but my family club is Everton because my grandad’s brother played for them. And my uncle runs the supporters club so I’ve got a bit of an affinity for Everton as well. But I lived five minutes from Wednesday’s ground so I’d go there a lot.

Do you remember your first game?

I don’t remember exactly my first game but I remember Lee Chapman was playing. And I now know Lee Chapman, which is a bit weird. But it was in the 80’s at some time when they had a right dodgy kit. We had season tickets for years, and one year we got on the opening credits for Match of the Day which was amazing!

How about favourite ever game?

When we beat West Ham 5-1 at Hillsborough was a moment, obviously 2-1 at Wembley against Sheffield United will always live long in the memory. Although I once went on a school trip to France, and while we were there we chipped off without telling the teacher and went off on one. And we got on the tube and we found these tickets to watch France play just after they’d won the World Cup and we went to watch France versus Poland and Zidane scored. The teacher never knew we were meant to be in bed it was amazing!

Who's your favourite player?

It’s got to be Chris Waddle, he’s a dude isn’t he? But I did also used to like John Sheridan, who could honestly put a pass 80 yards on a five pence, his passing was unbelievable. Then there was David Hurst, he was the one. But Steve Bould ruined his career by doing this horrible tackle on him, which completely mashed him up.

How about players you don't like?

I hate Didier Drogba with every sinew in my body. I think he’s a horrible, horrible man. To be honest I don’t like Chelsea very much, I find them to be a little bit arrogant, the level of sportsmanship there is terrible, so I’m not a massive Chelsea fan!

So I'm guessing you're not a fan of the way football is headed?

It’s disgraceful, it’s not healthy is it? I don’t think it can ever be a good thing. The way Real Madrid are behaving too, I think they should regulate football, make it a bit more of an even playing field because they’re killing off the game really in some respects. It’s supposed to be the people’s sport and look at season ticket prices? They shouldn’t allow evil profiteers ruin it like they do everything else.

How is the Sheffield rivalry coming on?

Actually I was in favour of a merger. Basically I think that the two Sheffield clubs between them could have over 70,000 fans, which is a lot of money. And we’re both languishing in the second tier of football. Put it this way, if in another ten or fifteen years none of them are enjoying any success we ought to have a long hard look at what our priorities are and say, “is this such a bad idea?”.

Surely the fans would never allow that?

God no! I think the rivalry would stop it ever happening.

So did you feel sorry for United in last season's Play-Off final?

No. I still hate United don’t get me wrong but if at the same time if we could united behind one Sheffield club then fair enough. Sheffield is a great city and I think that if we were to have one club and get a bit of money behind it we could be a force. But I went on Soccer AM and said that and got a load of grief so there you go!

How do you keep up-to-date with Wednesday news when you're touring?

Radio, internet and people keep me informed of what’s happening. The thing about Wednesday is that despite being in the Championship we still get good attendances. Which is testament to us a club. It’s the same as Sunderland and Man City and other clubs like that who’ve always been well followed.

What do you make of the manager?

I think Brian Laws is a good guy, I rate him a lot. I actually remember when the backpass rule came in, remember that Makita tournament they used to have? He was playing in it for Nottingham Forest and I remember him crawling on the floor to head the ball back to the keeper, which was just really weird!

What do you do to keep entertained when on the tour bust?

I like a bit of Pro Evo, and a bit of Champ Manager now and then. If you’ve got the last Champ Manager that came out, buy Aleksandar Kolarov, from Lazio. He never has a bad game, and his free kicks are stunning. You’ll probably get him £3.5m. Take a look!

Will do Rev. What's your plans for the rest of the year?

More festivals, European festivals, we’ve got a tour later on in the year and I’m also getting married. I’ve managed to get my missus into football as well!

Would you ever do a Cup Final song should Wednesday get there?

I might be persuadable. But we’re talking a big what if there! You never know though we’ve done it before.
